The one and only Danai Gurira play as Okoye in Black Panther, This will be about Okoye as much as possible because of the love I have for the character before the movie. Danai’s performance was so amazing bringing Okoye to life that at this point I don’t think I’ll ever become tired of seeing her beautiful face everywhere.

Okoye is The General of The Dora Milaje and if you haven’t seen the Black Panther movie by now WHY? I’ve seen it twice already just to see Okoye scenes. I’ve been obsessed with her that I’m thinking of going for a third time just to see my favorite scenes. Every scene with Okoye was my favorite so it’s safe to say when The Black Panther DVD comes out I will finally be able to rewind and rewatch all my favorite parts.

Okoye was written so beautifully in this movie that her lover who is W’kabi played by Daniel Kaluuya didn’t sway her loyalty to her nation and job when he switched to protect Killmonger towards the end of the movie. I loved that a woman finally didn’t have or need a man to make her complete or do what she didn’t want to do. There are too many movies where the woman in a relationship with a man will do whatever he asks of her because that’s what suppose to happen. I dislike movies that portray women as weak and make it look like a man is necessary for a woman to survive and thrive in life.

It was a beautiful moment to see when Okoye said she would kill you for her nation and I’m not going to play like I wasn’t proud both times because I was, extremely proud that she knew where she stood and what she was fighting for. Okoye has and will always be an inspiration when it comes to handling people that like to talk about women needing a man to complete them and other nonsense, Women are strong for every reason in the world and can do and be whatever it is they want to. A man is not necessary for survival nor should they be vocal in any decisions they don’t directly affect them.

“I loved that a woman finally didn’t have or need a man to make her complete or do what she didn’t want to do. “<–Same. It so exhausting to keep seeing movies doing the whole "Damsel in Distress" thing. Glad Black Panther showed a different side. 🙂 Great post!

Thank You! Black Panther was such a great movie I’m hoping that it’s a trailblazer for how women should be written in the future
