First look: Bushida: Soul of the Samurai
Bushida: Soul of the Samurai is an upcoming graphic novel set in a post-apocalyptic Japan which follows a young ronin named Bushida Funakochi. Coming from the mind of Tony Jackson, Bushida is said to be a mix between Cyberpunk and Horror with supernatural elements.
Centuries ago, The Yakuza and Triads had formed a truce to take control of Japan. When Foreign Powers infiltrate the land, the natives are forced back into the old ways of the Feudal Era. Born of a Japanese father & Nigerian mother, Bushida is here to save the day.
Bushida: Soul of the Samurai sounds promising. Not much has been revealed about the comic itself, but the illustrations are gorgeous. We get a black female lead and a Samurai story all in one. The way of bushido is something that I find interesting. Samurai had a code of conduct they lived by. Honor means something even in situations where shadiness was afoot. That’s something that I find dope as hell. I try to live by honoring my word. That’s something I could relate too. How could I not be interested?
Something else I found pretty interesting is that her love interest in also black. Does that mean that we can expect more black faces in homogenous Japan? I’d love to see it, but if it would make total sense. Either way, I’m excited to see how this pans out.
