12 Days of Anime: 4 Memorable Original Soundtracks (Day 12)

Adobe_Post_20181213_2141021            Two years ago,  I wrote a post about my love of ost.  For those who are unfamiliar with the term, OST stands for Original Soundtrack.  This post entailed what I loved about them and then extended to some of my favorite themes from anime.  This got me thinking if I had to compile a list of my favorite soundtrack now, would it be any different.

So let’s get right into it.

Kids on the Slope 坂道のアポロン

While most the songs on this soundtrack are simply new arrangements of iconic Jazz records. There still so good.  With composer Yoko Kanno being involved, I expect nothing less.  She is in terms of composing, masterful.   Kids on the Slope is a story that took place in the past and the music was a reflection of that time period.  Each song used matched the scene perfectly.  That’s what makes a solid soundtrack in my opinion.

Cowboy Bebop

I feel like this is a bit of a lazy pick because Cowboy Bebop is known heavily for its music but this list wouldn’t be right without it. Yoko Kanno is the goat and this is another one of those projects that she nailed beautifully.  This is the type of soundtrack that you feel in your soul.  It enhanced the story and told it’s own story. This soundtrack is one you can bump in any occasion and it still takes on a life of its own.

Samurai Champloo

The soundtrack for Samurai Champloo is amazing.  It fits the style, it fits the mood and over aesthetic of the animation.  I feel like it’s similar to Cowboy Bebop in that the soundtrack fuels Champloo as well.  The music in this series sort of takes on a life on its own and that what I love about it.

R.I.P  Nujabes

Yu Yu Hakusho 幽☆遊☆白書

While I feel like the music in Yu  Yu Hakusho is a bit dated,  it still hits home like my first time. The Japanese themes knock hard, the English version are pretty dope as well.  This soundtrack is bop and so nostalgia triggering.  I think that’s because it’s sort of like a time capsule and sonically reflections the music of the time.   That’s why I put this ost high up on my list.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad ベック
  • Full Metal Alchemist/ Brotherhood
  • Blood +
  • Inuyasha: A Feudal Fairytale
  • Nana
  • Naruto
  • Streets of Rage 2

Here you have it.  This is my list of memorable original soundtracks.
