Sonic Rumble

Special Thanks to SEGA for allowing me with the opportunity to participate in the Closed Beta for Sonic Rumble. Ever since Sega acquired Rovio (the studio behind Angry Birds), I went into this beta test expecting to have a good time. I tested this app on a Samsung Galaxy S21 and downloaded this from the Google Playstore. Your mileage may vary as opposed to mine. Let the post begin.

Sonic Rumble is basically Sonic the Hedgehog with Fall Guys mechanics baked into one. Everyone would start with the generic Sonic skin on their character. Each play session is incorporated into 3 rounds. Those who make it into the final round will win the overall game. Since this is a mobile app, most play sessions are quick and minimal. The types of mini-games are either collection or endurance-based. Collect your rings, gain skins, and customize your character to set it apart from everyone else.

Thoughts on Sonic Rumble

The gameplay feels smooth, however, for a Sonic game it does feel sluggish. On-screen controls respond with no issue, but you can’t expect to play Sonic Rumble with the mindset of doing a speed run. Sonic Dash felt smoother and faster in comparison. The gameplay mechanic feels clunky and needs to be more responsive. Sonic is always associated with speed, gotta go fast. The soundtrack seems generic, having arranged versions of songs previously in existence such as Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes along with Chemical Plant Zone. Visuals are clean, crisp, and vivid. My display settings was defaulted to medium settings, allowing me to have a fun time.

Gameplay Session

My overall takeaway from the whole experience felt pretty generic and barebones for a Sonic Game. A lot can be improved and it is easy to pick up and learn the controls. The game forces you into a tutorial before sending you into the wild with the online competition. There are Gatcha elements in the form of a conveyor belt similar to choosing a character on Knuckles Chaotix. Sonic Rumble has a long way and will cater and appeal to either the casual gamer or the avid Sonic fan looking to have a good time while on the go. Core Sonic Fans will have mixed feelings for this. Don’t expect a AAA Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Generations experience with this. It has been a pleasure with playing the Closed Beta of Sonic Rumble
